ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the reasons of discontinuation of LARC among married women visiting Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi.
Study Design: Descriptive cross sectional study
Place and duration: Indoor patient and outdoor patient of Gynae/Obs department and Family planning center of Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from October 2015 to December 2015.
Methodology: Via non probability  convenience sampling 356 females who discontinued LARC use within a year, irrespective of their center of initiation/placement of LARC were selected and interviewed. Reasons of discontinuation were grouped into four categories i.e. changes in bleeding pattern, pain, weight gain and others like skin changes, expulsion of IUD and social and religious myths.
Results: In our study 48.3% were IUD users, 47.6% had used injectables and 3.7 were sub dermal implant users .Most of the respondents (50%) discontinued the methods because of the change in bleeding pattern followed by pain (12.2%), weight gain(7.32%)  while 30.45 % discontinued due to other reasons like melasma and other skin changes and due to different social and religious myths e.g. fear of cancer or other health issues.
Conclusion: Pre placement counseling of the females regarding the effects and problems related to the method opted by them and reassurance on revisits may help in alleviating their anxiety and in decreasing   the discontinuation of the LARC.
